Background: The pituitary gland releases hormones that regulate growth, lactation, homeostasis, the stress response, reproductive development and fitness as well as water metabolism. LHX3 is one of several transcription factors that have been implicated in pituitary development. This particular transcription factor is critical for motor neuron specification and the development of the anterior and intermediate lobes of the pituitary gland in mammals. The sequence of the human LHX3 gene has been identified and characterized by IU researchers.
